The most common surprise in home sauna reviews has nothing to do with heat. It is the electrician's quote. A buyer picks a cabin, sets a delivery date, and learns the week before it arrives that the sauna needs a 240 volt circuit the house does not have. This guide covers what a home sauna needs from your electrical panel, how to read the spec sheet, what the work may cost, and the manufacturer's electrical spec for every Finnmark, Revive and SaunaLife sauna we sell.

120V vs 240V in plain numbers
Every sauna spec sheet lists three numbers: volts, watts and amps. The one that decides your installation is amps, and you can check it yourself. Amps equal watts divided by volts. A 1,500 watt heater on 120 volts draws 12.5 amps. A 6,000 watt heater on 240 volts draws 25 amps.
A standard household outlet is 120 volts on a 15 or 20 amp circuit. That is enough for a small infrared cabin. Infrared heaters warm the body directly and run at lower cabin temperatures, so a one or two person unit can work with about 1,500 to 1,750 watts. A traditional sauna heats the air and the stones to 175 to 212°F. Most full-size traditional heaters run 3.5 to 9 kilowatts, which is more current than a 120 volt circuit can carry, so they move to 240 volts along with the larger infrared cabins. Compact heaters such as the 1.9 kW Harvia in the Finnmark Trinity are the exception.
The second rule is duration. A sauna runs for 30 to 60 minutes at a time, often after a long preheat. Electricians treat that as a continuous load, and the National Electrical Code sizes the circuit for continuous heating loads at 125 percent of the rated current. A heater that draws 25 amps is sized as 31.25 amps, which is why a 6 kW sauna heater lands on a 30 amp or larger breaker and heavier wire. This is also why a sauna should never share a circuit with a space heater, a hair dryer or a refrigerator.
The quick read. 120 volt plug-in: most one and two person infrared cabins. 240 volt plug-in: larger infrared cabins. 240 volt hardwired by an electrician: every traditional heater from about 3.5 kW up.
Which path fits your house?
Start with the circuit you have, or the one you are willing to add, and let that narrow the list.
- Only 120 volt outlets, or you rent. Look at the Finnmark FD-1 and FD-2. Both use a standard NEMA 5-15P plug. Plan on a circuit with nothing else running on it. Browse home saunas.
- You can add a 240 volt receptacle. The Finnmark FD-3 and larger infrared cabins open up. An electrician installs the NEMA 6-15R receptacle, and nothing is hardwired.
- You can hardwire, or the sauna is going outside. Traditional heat is on the table: the Revive 2 Person and large format Revive indoors, and the SaunaLife E6, E7, E8 and EE8G barrels outdoors. Read the outdoor cost section before you budget.
- A condo on 208 volt service. Confirm the voltage with your building engineer first. A 240 volt heater on 208 volts produces about 75 percent of its rated heat, so a 120 volt infrared cabin is usually the cleaner choice.

A few notes on the table. The SaunaLife barrels are also sold without a heater, from $5,340 for the E6 to $7,190 for the EE8G, and with HUUM heater options. The breaker and wire figures above are from the Harvia KIP installation manual, so if you choose a HUUM heater, ask us for the HUUM installation sheet before your electrician quotes. The same applies to The Sauna and The Sauna Mini from Plunge. Their listings on our site do not yet publish an electrical spec, and we will send the manufacturer's document before you order.

What an electrician may cost
HomeGuide's 2026 cost data puts a new dedicated circuit at $250 to $900 installed, with $50 to $150 of that in materials and $200 to $750 in labor. A 240 volt outlet on its own runs $250 to $800 installed and is usually part of that circuit price. HomeGuide lists electrician rates of $50 to $130 per hour plus a $100 to $200 call-out fee.
Three things push a quote above that range.
- Distance. Rewiring runs about $7 to $10 per linear foot. A barrel sauna 80 feet across the yard costs more to feed than a cabin in the room next to the panel, and outdoor runs often need a trench or conduit.
- A full panel. If there is no room for a double pole breaker, a subpanel costs $500 to $1,700.
- Not enough service. If the house cannot carry the added load, a main panel upgrade costs $1,300 to $2,500 for 200 amp service, or $2,000 to $4,000 for 400 amp service.
Outdoor saunas cost more to wire
The $250 to $900 range above describes a simple indoor circuit near the panel. Outdoor barrels are a different job. Buyers who share their quotes in sauna forums and on Reddit commonly report $1,500 to $3,000 or more once a trench, buried conduit and sometimes a small subpanel at the sauna are included. These are reported quotes, not survey data, and local labor rates vary widely. Quotes of $5,000 and up do appear, and they usually mean the panel or the electrical service needs an upgrade, not that the sauna circuit itself is unusual.
To get a quote you can trust, collect three from licensed electricians. Send each one a photo of your panel with the door open and the breaker labels readable, the distance from the panel to the sauna site, and the manufacturer's installation PDF for the exact model. Quotes built on the same information are easy to compare.
Panel and service upgrades are how a sauna budget doubles. Get the electrician's opinion on panel capacity before you order a traditional sauna, especially the 8 kW models. It costs a site visit and it settles the budget before the freight truck is scheduled.

Before the electrician visits
Send your electrician the manufacturer's spec for the exact model, then walk through this list together.
- Panel. Main breaker size, open slots for a double pole breaker, and the current load on the house. Central air, an EV charger, a pool pump and an electric range all count.
- Voltage at the building. Many condo and apartment buildings are served at 208 volts rather than 240. A 240 volt resistance heater on 208 volts produces about 75 percent of its rated heat, so it heats more slowly and may not reach its top temperature. Ask your building engineer before buying a 240 volt sauna for a condo.
- Plug or hardwire. Plug-in cabins need the matching receptacle, NEMA 5-15R or 5-20R for 120 volt units and 6-15R for the 240 volt Finnmark cabins. A 5-20R receptacle accepts a standard 5-15P plug. Traditional heaters are hardwired.
- GFCI. Your electrician and the heater manual may disagree. See GFCI, outdoor lights and subpanels below.
- No extension cords or power strips. Plug directly into the wall.
- Outdoor barrels. Weather-rated wiring and a disconnect the electrician is comfortable with, run before the barrel is assembled on its base.
- Permit. A new 240 volt circuit usually needs one. A licensed electrician pulls it as part of the job.
Once the circuit is in, the sauna becomes the easy part of the room. Regular sauna use is associated with lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in a long-running Finnish cohort, and a systematic review reported possible benefits for blood pressure and several chronic conditions. Those are observational and early findings, and heat is a real stress on the heart. Anyone with a heart condition, low or high blood pressure, or who is pregnant should talk with a physician before starting. GFCI, outdoor lights and subpanels
When the electrician wants a GFCI and the manual says no
This is one of the most common arguments in sauna installs. Many electricians default to GFCI protection, especially for outdoor circuits and anything near water. Harvia's KIP installation manual says not to use a GFCI with that heater. Sauna heater elements can leak a small amount of current as they age, and a GFCI may trip repeatedly mid-session.
Neither side gets to settle it alone. The authority having jurisdiction, meaning your local building department and the inspector who signs off the permit, has the final say on what the code requires at your address, and code requirements differ between towns and code editions. The practical path is to bring the heater manual to the first conversation, have the electrician check the requirement with the local inspector before wiring, and follow what the inspector approves. If a GFCI is required and it trips, call us and the manufacturer before replacing anything.
Lights and outlets at an outdoor sauna
Do not tap one leg of the 240 volt heater circuit to power a light or an outlet. That circuit is sized and dedicated for the heater, the wire specified for it often has no neutral, and borrowing from it creates an unbalanced, uninspectable setup. If you want lighting or a receptacle at the sauna, ask the electrician to price a small subpanel at the sauna site. One feeder from the house then supplies a breaker for the heater and a separate breaker for lights and outlets, and it is a job the inspector can approve.

Delivery, assembly and returns
Saunas ship by freight to the contiguous 48 states and arrive in 2 to 4 weeks. Delivery is curbside unless you add inside delivery, so plan the path from the curb to the room or the backyard pad. Report any shipping damage within 48 hours with photos. The SaunaLife barrels are designed for a one day, two person DIY assembly, and Revive ships pre-assembled panels. Schedule the electrician after the cabin is set and before the first session.
Returns are accepted within 30 days on unused, uninstalled units in the original packaging, with a 20 percent restocking fee on Revive. Finnmark saunas and uncrated saunas are final sale, which is one more reason to settle the circuit before you order. Frequently asked questions
Can an infrared sauna plug into a regular outlet?
Many one and two person infrared saunas can. The Finnmark FD-1 and FD-2 use a standard 120 volt NEMA 5-15P plug, at 1,500 and 1,750 watts. Larger infrared cabins such as the Finnmark FD-3 move to a 240 volt receptacle. Check the plug type on the spec sheet before you buy.
Does a home sauna need a dedicated circuit?
Every traditional sauna heater needs its own 240 volt circuit. For 120 volt infrared cabins, a dedicated circuit is the safe default, because the sauna draws close to the full rating of a 15 amp circuit for up to an hour.
How much does it cost to wire a sauna?
A new dedicated circuit typically costs $250 to $900 installed according to HomeGuide's 2026 data. Long runs add about $7 to $10 per foot, a subpanel adds $500 to $1,700, and a main panel upgrade adds $1,300 to $4,000.
What size breaker does a 6 kW or 8 kW sauna heater need?
Harvia's KIP manual calls for a 30 amp double pole breaker with 10/2 copper wire for 4.5 and 6 kW heaters, and a 40 amp double pole breaker with 8/2 wire for 8 kW heaters, all at 240 volts single phase. Other heater brands publish their own figures.
Will a 240 volt sauna work on 208 volts?
It will run, and it will produce about 75 percent of its rated heat, so it warms more slowly and may not reach its top temperature. Many condo buildings are served at 208 volts. Confirm your building's voltage before ordering.
Do I need GFCI for a sauna heater?
It depends on your local code and the heater. Harvia's KIP manual says not to use a GFCI with that heater, while many electricians want GFCI protection on outdoor circuits. Your local inspector has the final say. Bring the heater manual to your electrician and have them confirm with the inspector before wiring.
Can I power lights from the heater's 240V circuit?
No. Do not tap one leg of the heater's 240 volt circuit for lights or outlets. The circuit is dedicated to the heater. For lighting at an outdoor sauna, have an electrician install a small subpanel with a separate breaker for lights and receptacles.
Is a 120V infrared sauna always apartment plug-and-play?
Not always. The Finnmark FD-2 draws about 14.6 amps, nearly all of a 15 amp circuit, and apartment outlets often share a circuit with other rooms. The Trinity models add a second heater load that needs its own circuit. Check which outlets share the breaker, confirm the lease allows it, and never use an extension cord.
